There have been several Tinkerbell non-theatrical movies put out recently. Originally, I was reluctant to watch these since the non-theatrical Disney sequels in the 90s were of a disappointing quality. These are good movies and I think they’ve gotten better with each new release. “Tinkerbell and the Pirate Fairy” is a fun movie and has something that would appeal to lots of kids because there are pirates and fairies in it. I like that the new fairy Zarina seems like a chemist. In the next movie “The Neverbeast” the fairy Fawn seems like a biologist. Tinkerbell is a “tinker” and is constantly engineering things. I can’t really think of many kids movies with female scientists as main characters with the exception of Big Hero 6 and Disney’s Tarzan (Jane is a biologist), so if you want to give young girls STEM role models these are actually good movies to have them watch. The fairies all have different talents so you can plan activities around those; like making snowflakes and talking about how the crystals form (Periwinkle); sorting animal toys into mammals, insects, birds, etc.  (vertabrates)  (invertebrates)(Fawn); making rain in a jar (Silvermist); lost things hunt or building something (Tinkerbell); talking about how a prism works (Iridessa); and/or making paper flowers or coloring in the parts of a flower in a diagram (Rosetta). You can have children be sorted by their talent by choosing necklaces that represent the different talents.

I also had the kids have a relay race. I put plastic jewels (Assorted Pirate Gems set of 12) and coins in a large plastic container. The kids needed to scoop the treasure out with a slotted spoon and carry it over to a bowl. Whatever team had the most pieces of treasure at the end won. It was interesting to see the kids try to decide if they should spend more time fishing out more coins that were difficult to get or just go fast and get the jewels. After the race was over some of the younger children were having fun just playing around in the water with the treasure.

Party Food

You can use a pirate theme for the cake. I made this one with Pocky. You can get these in large quantities at Costco in Australia. The sand is crushed up shortbread cookies. The pearl necklace is made from round mints.

Mushroom and Dirt Cake

The “dirt” on this cake is crushed up Oreos. I made a regular chocolate cake, iced it with chocolate frosting and then put the Oreo crumbs on top.

These Pocky sticks are special ones covered in white chocolate that I got at an Asian grocery store. Just cut the top off the strawberry and put the chocolate end of the Pocky into the strawberry.

Taco dip with ladybugs

Taco dip is easy to make, just mix 8 oz of softened cream cheese with 8 oz of sour cream and 1 packet of dry taco seasoning. Top with shredded cheese and any vegetables that you like to have on tacos. I made the lady bugs by cutting a black olive in half for the head and partially slicing a cherry tomato to form the wings. I used a toothpick to poke little holes in the tomatoes and then I stuck poppy seeds into the holes by gently pushing the tomato into a pile of poppy seeds and brushing off the excess seeds.

Fairy Dust Necklaces

You can give out these little necklaces as party favors. I got the little bottles, string, and beads online from Fire Mountain Gems. The glitter Martha Stewart Fine Glitter .37oz 24/Pkg-Bling Sparkle is Martha Stewart glitter from Micheal’s (USA). I made the fairy wands with “eye pins”. You put the beads on and then curl the end with a pliers to make a loop to string onto your necklace.

Pirate fairy garland

I made the pirate flag by drawing the skull and cross bones with glue on a piece of fun foam and adding the glitter. I just made the outline of the skull and eyes and lines at the bottom and pushed the glue around to fill out the rest. The blue bottles represent the bottle that the blue fairy dust in the movie was kept in. One of the plot points is that Zarina makes dust that switches the fairies talents so I took fairy cutouts from a craft book and added glitter from their new talent to give them mixed outfits like the ones they wear in the movie.
