Are you throwing a Coco party? There are lots of great Dia de los Muertos ideas around the web, but the following ideas tie in to Coco specifically.
Music plays a large role in Coco, so I wanted to make something inspired by music notes. I used altered sword picks to make the stems for music notes and the black olives are the bottoms of the notes.
I cut the little extra bits off of my swords and then wrapped insulator tape over the handle of the sword. Then I cut it into the shape of a music note tail.
I made these Coco sundaes with chocolate ice cream and cinnamon. I mixed the softened ice cream with the cinnamon and then put the ice cream back in the freezer to let it harden again. I mixed cinnamon in because Mexican hot chocolate has cinnamon in it. After I took the bowl out of the freezer, I added the sprinkles. You can get the skull and bone sprinkles following the link at the end of the post.
I also made this version of the sundae. This one is a little more chaotic. I’m not sure which one I like more. I think this would be something fun for kids to do at a party.
The last thing I made was this sweet potato marigold. Marigolds are all over in Coco’s version of the Land of the Remembered. I boiled the sweet potatoes and then mashed them with ginger, cinnamon, brown sugar, and a little bit of salt. Then I used Wilton tip 1M in a large frosting bag to pipe the sweet potatoes out onto a plate starting in the center and working in a circular pattern out to the edge of the plate.
