Brave Party

Brave Party

Happy Mother’s Day everyone! You may want to celebrate by watching a movie that explores a mother daughter relationship.  Pixar made it’s first fairy tale with Brave. Merida is a really cool princess that doesn’t have a prince save her, and there really is no princess/prince love story in this movie which is a pretty radical departure from other fairy tale movies. Bears play a big role in this movie so you definitely want to have them represented in some form if you have a brave party.

You could make a teddy bear cake. His ears are a cupcake cut in half and placed cut side down on the cake and his snout is another cupcake. The cake I made for this party was based on the stone circle Merida finds out in the woods. I used broken pieces of a chocolate bar for the stones. I put a really tiny Angus on the cake that I got out of a vending machine because that was the only Brave toy I could find at the time.

Some of these foods represent food from the movie. Merida’s little brothers love sweets and they eat some cookies or buns that look like the buns in the yellow bowl above. When Merida and her mom are out in the woods Elenore eats some berries that look like blueberries. There are three chocolate bears there which will be for obvious reasons if you have seen the movie. Next to them are jam cookies that look a lot like the cake Merida gets from the witch…I mean wood carver. In the movie it is more like a little pie or tart, which you could also make. Will O’ the Wisps are little blue wood sprites that Merida comes across in the woods that guide her throughout the story. They glow in the movie so I made these from electric lights.

I got these Blue Submersible Diamond LED Lights from www.100candles.com.  I put a piece of blue tissue paper over the light and kept it on with a little clear hair elastic. I set it on a glass so it looks like it is floating like the wisps do in the movie. *Safety note below for those with young children*

*These lights have button batteries in them which can come out very easily. If you make these for a party with young children who may put non-food items in their mouth make sure they are out of reach of them. Button batteries are very dangerous if children swallow them beyond just a choking hazard. (If you suspect a child has swallowed a button battery make sure you take them to a hospital immediately). If you have anything with button batteries that can be popped out easily (unlike toys which should have the compartments closed with a screw) make sure it is away from little children. I have seen some electronics remotes with button batteries that have easy to open battery covers that I think are best kept out of reach of little children as well. *
