My Little Pony Friendship is Magic Food

My Little Pony Friendship is Magic Food

In 2010 My Little Pony launched it’s fourth version. When I was a kid shows based on toys were often lacking in quality, so I wasn’t sure what to expect from this show. I have been pleasantly surprised by it’s adventure story lines. I think it can be helpful for kids who struggle with social interaction. There are some episodes that I think would be very beneficial for all kids to see. For example, (Season 4 Ep 21) “Testing Testing 1, 2, 3”  is about a pony that has difficulties with studying and parallels students with learning disabilities. In a follow-up episode (S6 Ep 7) “Newbie Dash”,  you see the pony achieve the goal that required the test. This particular pony seems quite confident, but the episode explores how she was bullied in the past (which is often the case for students with learning disabilities) and how that is affecting her later on. I think it is a very positive message to see how she overcomes her studying difficulties and bullying and achieves her goals, and also that sometimes people who boast are trying to hide their own insecurities. This is an animated series that I think most parents wouldn’t mind watching with their kids and might actually enjoy. While this show is targeted at young girls and their parents, it actually has a substantial adult following. The adults call themselves “Bronies” and “Pegasisters” and there is a documentary about adult fans of the series “Bronies:The Extremely Unexpected Adult Fans of My Little Pony” (2012) that I found very interesting.

So if your kids or you are a fan of this series, I made some food based on things from different episodes for a party or movie night.

“Too Many Pinkie Pies” Cake

In season 3 episode 3, Pinkie Pie feels like she is missing out on spending time with her friends when they aren’t all together so she goes to a magic pond in a cave to make more copies of herself.

Pinkie Pie in the Cave

There are lots of cool plants down there. Here are the materials I used to make the mushrooms and the sea anemone shaped things.

I used a blueberry gummy for the top of the mushroom. I cut a little bit out of the bottom so the licorice candy would fit nicely and hold together.

I cut some loom bands and then used another in tact one to wrap around the open bands and a toothpick. Then I wrapped washi tape around all of it. I used glow in the dark bands because in the show it kind of looks like the top of these are luminescent.

I made a rectangle cake and cut a bit of the edge off to make the rocks in the cave. I added more milk to my frosting for the rocks so I could just dip those pieces of cake in to make it easier to cover them in frosting.

Pinkie looks at herself in the water and her reflection turns into a copy of her. But here doubles start making doubles and the whole thing gets out of hand.

Throughout season 4, the ponies get objects that help them in a crisis at the end of the season.

Rarity gets a a rainbow spool of thread.

You can use rainbow licorice as an edible version of this.

Applejack gets a gold “bit” after another run in with the Flim Flam brothers.

You can buy some chocolate coins to represent the bits.

Fluttershy gets a flower from the Breezies.

Flower Cookie Recipe adapted from Land O’ Lakes Butter Holiday Cookies magazine (1999):

3/4 cup butter, softened

2/3 cup sugar

1 egg

1 tsp vanilla

1/4 tsp almond extract

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 tsp baking powder

1/4 tsp salt

After making the dough, separate out about 1/6 th of it. Color that dough with yellow food coloring and add blue food coloring to the larger amount. Chill the dough for at least 1 hour. Heat oven to 325 F.

Roll dough into balls and place on cookie sheet in the shape of a flower. You don’t need to smash the pieces together, they will connect as they bake.

Angle’s Salad and a Cheese Sandwich

Pinkie Pie meets a pony named Cheese Sandwich in season 4. He gives her “Boneless,” his rubber chicken which you could use as a decoration, but I couldn’t think of a good way to make that out of food. So I made a grilled cheese sandwich instead.

Also pictured is the salad Fluttershy makes for her pet bunny, Angle in Season 2 episode 19. Don’t forget the cherry! This salad also has iceberg lettuce, carrots, pineapple, and oranges. I made some cinnamon cream cheese for the top. Just mix some cinnamon and sugar into softened cream cheese.

Zap Apple Jam from “Family Appreciation Day” (S 2 Ep 12)

The Apple farm grows some magical rainbow colored apples called zap apples. They make them into rainbow colored jam. I made this out of Jell-O, but I only used 3 colors. You could make all the colors of the rainbow if you want. When you look down on the jar the yellow Jell-O looks green where it is close to the blue and orange where it is close to the red. When making the Jell-O make sure that the bottom layer is set and that you use cooled (not hot and not set) Jell-O to pour the next layer so they don’t just mix together.

This post started to get really long so I decided to split it in two. I have crafts related to My Little Pony for next week, so check back in if you or your kids are a fan of the show!
