I’ve got some more Moana crafts today. These all involve coconuts in some way. The first two are based on the Kakamora. They are basically living coconuts. The last one is made with coconut.

So here are my Kakamora crafts. The Kakamora are the little coconut pirates that try to steal the heart of Te Fiti from Moana and Maui. You could make some Kakamora out of coconuts, but if you want a lot like the big group in the movie that would probably be an unreasonable amount of coconuts to have on hand and I’m not sure if you can get them year round everywhere. So instead I used hazelnuts to make them. Then you can have a whole bunch and they are about the right scale for the little dolls.

To make these I just cut out the shape of their face from construction paper and then drew little faces on them. I glued them to the nuts with Elmer’s glue.

I also crocheted some Kakamora. I didn’t write down the pattern for this when I made them, but they are pretty simple shapes and all of the Kakamora in the movie are all a bit different. I just made the green one in two halves and started out like you would for a hat. Then I made it longer than you would for a hat and sewed the two halves together. I used cotton/acrylic Comfy Worsted Yarn for these. I used a thinner yarn for the bands around the arms, legs and head and sewed them on after the body was assembled.

For the brown one, I made one half like a hat and the other I didn’t increase very much in the first 2 rounds so the top was a little pointy, then I went ahead normally as you would for a hat. You can just make a spherical shape if you want to put a star fish or shell hat on the head of yours though. The face is just a rectangle or square out of rows of single crochet stitches. I just crocheted around the edge with sc, hdc, and dc stitches to make the different shapes of the faces. Then I sewed the eyes and stitched the details on the face and then sewed it to the body.

My last project also is related to coconuts. I made coconut macaroons and I added matcha (green tea powder) to them so they would be green to look like islands. I dipped the macaroons in dark chocolate because I like macaroons with dark chocolate, but it also looks like lava at the base of the island.

Here is the recipe the macaroons:

3/4 cups sugar

2 egg whites

2 1/2 cups unsweetened coconut *

1 Tablespoon matcha

1 tsp vanilla extract

pinch of salt

~ 1 cup of melted dark chocolate

Heat oven to 350 degrees F. Mix ingredients and then spoon large dollops onto baking sheet. Wet your hands and form the batter on the baking sheet into mountain shapes. Bake for about 15-20 minutes until the bottom and tops are starting to brown. After they have cooled melt dark chocolate and dip the bottom of the cookies in it.

*The unsweetened coconut I had was in flakes and I chopped it up before I used it so that it would look more like vegetation on the island. I adapted this recipe from one that called for shredded coconut so I think this way the amount of coconut I added was closer to what the original recipe called for as well.
