Rainbow Brite was my favorite toy as a child so I had a lot of fun with this party! If you don’t have the original dolls, don’t worry. All the dolls shown in this post are Itty Bittys from Hallmark, and they are available now in the America. I made this rainbow out of Sculpy clay. It is not edible even though you see it below with the cookies. You could make this out of fondant if you want to eat it though.
Food for your party can be very simple, you just need it to be colorful!
These little stars are cheese. Since I was born in Wisconsin where every party is required to have cheese, I am keeping up with that tradition. Unfortunately in Australia all the cheese is white, but in America your cheddar star sprinkles will also be colorful. I just used a cookie cutter to make the star shape.
Jell-O (Jelly) Star Sprinkles
I reduced the cold and hot water to make this Jell-O so it would be more firm when I cut it into the star shapes and for when people pick them up to eat them. I made these in a small dish and cut the stars with a cookie cutter when the Jell-O was still in the dish. Then I took the extra bits around the stars out and then removed the star shapes. I tried to take the Jell-O out first and then cut out the stars, but I couldn’t get the Jell-O to come out easily and it turned into a bit of a mess that way.
There were plenty of scraps left over from this so I layered them in another bowl to make a rainbow bowl of Jell-O also.
Here are my cloud cookies. I sifted a little powdered sugar on them after they came out of the oven so they would look whiter.
I also made Stormy’s rain clouds. I used the same recipe, but I added some crushed up OREO cookies to the batter. The lightening bolts are Starburst candies that I heated in the microwave for 10 seconds, and then flattened out in between two sheets of plastic wrap and cut into a lightening bolt shape with a cookie cutter.
Here is the recipe for the cookies:
3/4 cup butter, softened
2/3 cup sugar
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla
1/4 tsp almond extract (you could leave this out if you are worried about allergies)
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
Once you have made the dough, break it into two pieces making one a bit smaller than the other. Add crushed OREOs to the smaller piece of dough and kneed it in. Heat oven to 325 F. Roll the dough into balls to form pieces of the clouds. You just need to have them touching each other on the cookie sheet and they will bake together. Bake cookies for 12-16 minutes. I usually wait a few minutes after I take the cookies out of the oven to take them off the sheet so they don’t fall apart.
Here is what the party table looked like. I got the star banners from Coles supermarket.
If you want to do a little bit of dressing up at the party, I made a few accessories.
Belt and Hair Tie
These are made with fold over elastic. You can get this at fabric stores, Etsy, or Amazon. The stars are from FireMountainGems.com. I sewed the ends of elastic, but left some extra at both sides for the hair ties. Then I sewed across the free ends so they bunched together and connected them in the center and sewed them down to the main part of the hair tie making the bow shape. After this was done. I sewed the star on. Rainbow Brite had a purple hair tie with a red star in the TV show, but the doll had a blue ribbon, so I made both colors. I used more elastic to make the belt. The little rainbow is made of seed beads sewn onto felt. I like to use Delica brand seed beads for this type of project because they are all the same size. The seed beads that are less expensive have different sized holes and it tends to be very frustrating if a bunch won’t fit over the eye of your needle.
I have seen these made before with felt, but I crocheted these stars. I think these stay in your hair better if it is pulled up into a pony tail. They would probably stay up better if the stems were shorter, but then they wouldn’t look like the sprite’s stars. You can find the directions to crochet a star in this post.
I also made some little felt pouches like the ones the sprites have on their belts that you could use as party favors. To make these I used a star cookie cutter as a guide. For some types of felt you can just push the cookie cutter into the fabric and it will leave a pattern long enough that you can use that as a guide to cut out the star shape. For each pouch, I cut one full star and the second one with only 4 arms of the star. Then I sewed around the outside of the stars. I cut a notch into the top point of the star and sewed a button on the 4 pointed star.
