Eid al-Adha is a Muslim holiday based on the story of Ibrahim (Abraham in the Bible and the Torah) having a dream that God wants him to sacrifice his son, but God replaces his son with a lamb. This holiday comes after a one day fast. It is a very important day to fast because it is as if you have fasted every day before and every day after for that year. Festive lights are put up and people eat a big meal and celebrate with family and friends. Eid al-Adha is celebrated in many countries including Egypt. My Egyptian friend asked for my help to make some things for the holiday, and of course I was very excited to help!
The first thing we made were some paper sheep decorations. We made these by cutting around the edge of white paper plates and gluing the black paper face and legs on the sheep. We just drew the eyes on with a white colored pencil. If you want to make them even fancier, you could cut the paper plate scraps into coils and glue them on the sheep, but I think these are pretty cute the way they are.
We also made sheep cookies. The recipe for these is the same one that I used for the atom cookies in this post. You form the dough into balls for this recipe and they cook up together in the oven. You can make a lot of different things with it, like teddy bears for example. I think the sheep are the cutest though. My grandma liked to spin wool, and she loved things with sheep on them, so sheep are my favorite shape to make these cookies.
