Spots On! with Miraculous Ladybug

I was made aware of Miraculous Ladybug very recently, but I have a very enthusiastic fan in my life who really wanted some “miraculouses”.  This show is about superheros and just like Spiderman they are still in high school and their super personas are animal themed. The main superheros are Ladybug and Chat Noir and they live in Paris instead of New York. The miraculouses are pieces of jewelry with like magical creatures inside. The owner of the jewelry becomes a superhero or a super villain. Ladybug has an outfit similar to Spiderman and magic yo-yo and she gets around the city with it much like Spiderman with his webs. The similarities to Spiderman may partially explain why this show is so popular. I’ve found that lots of young boys and girls absolutely love Spiderman. Ladybug is a little different than most superheros though. Instead of being bulked up or having a pin-up girl aesthetic  she moves and looks more like an acrobat or a dancer. Chat Noir moves kind of like a ballroom dancer as well.

I think one aspect of the show that draws a lot of fans to it is the love square (not triangle) that involves the two main characters super hero identities and their secret identities. They are supposed to keep their identities secret from everyone because if anyone has both Chat Noir and Ladybug’s miraculouses they will be able to take over the world.

Another interesting aspect of this show is the creation of the villains. The secondary villains in this show are all recruited (using magic) after they have been treated badly or unfairly by someone. The principle villain, Hawkmoth, has a little exposition each episode about how they are susceptible to manipulation when they are upset about something.

This show has been around for a while, but it started in France and then Korea. It is currently on ABC3 in Australia and the first season was on Nickelodeon in the States. It is now available on Netflix in the US and the second season will be released this northern hemisphere summer. The episodes aired in different orders all over the world and I don’t know if any are in chronological order exactly. I have a list at the end of this post of an approximate chronological order if you want to try to watch them that way on Netflix.

Back to the Miraculouses. You can buy Ladybug’s earrings, but I think that is all you can buy. I made these out of polymer clay. These were made with Sculpy that I got from FireMountainGems.com. I bought this pack because it had multiple small packages of lots of different colors, because I just had a few little things I wanted to make. You can get larger blocks of single colors if you want to make a ton of Ladybug earrings for party favors.

To make the earrings I just rolled red clay into a ball and cut it in half. Then I cut very small cubes of black, rolled them into balls, and flattened them. Then I put them on the earrings and kind of rolled the rounded part on the table so the spots kind of flattened into the design.  I mixed a little blue and white clay with the green to get the turtle to be more of a jade color. I didn’t make the legs on it because I thought they may break off or make it uncomfortable to wear. I rolled a piece of black clay and then flattened it to make the band on the ring and then used a similar technique for the paw print that I used for the spots on the earrings.

I also made a similar type of bracelet with jade and adventurine carved stones, if you want to just reference the turtle miraculous if you are “bounding”. Fire Mountain Gems does actually sell a jade turtle, but I think it is a figurine, not a bead so you would need to get someone to drill holes in it or mount it on something if you want to wear it on a bracelet. They also have ladybug earrings  that don’t look exactly like the ones in the show, but they are similar.

Miraculous Ladybug Snacks

These are Babybel cheese with black olive spots. I used a food cutter to make the spots. These could represent Ladybug’s earrings or her compact. The sticks are Orangegrene, but you could also use Poky sticks to represent Chat Noir’s staff.

Hawkmoth’s Broach

I made this by cutting sliced apples and a blueberry.

Fox and Turtle Miraculous

The turtle is a piece of apple that I carved the pattern in the skin. The fox tail is made of an orange slice and apple.

Peacock Broach Snack with Queen Bee Honey

I drew the bee onto the glass container with Sharpies. Make sure to cut the blueberries in half to keep them in the correct spot on the apples.
