Purl

Purl

Pixar Has been making some short movies to try new techniques and give more animators chances to get their ideas out to the public. They will all be on Disney’s YouTube channel. The first of these is called Purl.

I was super excited about this because it is Pixar + yarn. It also is really cool for women who have worked in predominantly male environments, or anyone who feels different than everyone else in a new setting.

So of course I made the main character in the film, because she is a yarn ball after all!

First I made a crocheted ball. I think she’ll hold together better this way instead of just using an actual yarn ball. I wrote the instructions below.

You can leave the tail ends on to be the arms or tie a piece of yarn on. Now you need to wrap more of the yarn around your ball. Do it enough so that all the crocheting is covered.

I added my legs to the bottom before I wrapped the yarn as well. To give her feet their form, I just put some clear glue on them an bent them into position and let them dry.

Next I made the eyes.

I sewed the buttons on before I sewed them to the doll. When you are sewing the eyes on, make sure that you catch the crocheted part so they are firmly attached. Then I put a black jewel sticker over the tread on the buttons. Finish off by sewing on her eye brows and mouth with a darker colored pink yarn.

I made her little bag with doily thread. Basically you can chain a few stitches and then work around the whole thing adding stitches like you do for a ball, but it will make and oval shape instead of a round one. The “knitting needles” are toothpicks.
