Swimming Cap Easter Eggs

I hope everyone had a great Easter! I made these eggs a little late, but at least I got them done when it was still Easter in some time zones. These eggs are meant to look like like ladies wearing retro swim caps. I made these for Easter, but you could also make them for a pool party. In Australia those two things could be one in the same, because it’s still pretty warm here for Easter. I saw a version of these on Pinterest, but the crafter used artificial fabric flowers glued onto the eggs.

People don’t dye eggs very much in Australia. You won’t find pastel colored eggs in people’s Easter baskets, because there aren’t any white eggs sold in a typical grocery store. In Australia all the eggs are brown and they have a range of shades which works out really well for the skin tones on these. I usually struggle a bit to figure out what to do with eggs for Easter, but I really liked how these turned out. I only wanted to dye one half of the eggs, so I used little shot glasses with dye in them. The eggs just sat on top of them half in and half out of the dye. Make sure you put the cups in a pan, because water is going to spill out!

I put about 1/3 vinegar, 2/3 water, and 4 drops of liquid food coloring into the cups. I put the eggs in right after they were boiled and let them sit in the dye for about 10 minutes to get the bright colors. I used the lighter eggs in the yellow and orange dye and the put the darkest ones in the purple dye.

I just added a little more water to the cups for the next round of dyeing so that the color would go half way up the egg again. After the eggs dried, I drew a little face on them with sharpies.

All the decorations on these eggs are edible. I used chocolate frosting as “glue”. This frosting is made from chocolate chips, powdered sugar, butter, and milk. It gets quite hard when it dries. All the decorations are store bought cake decorations.

You can use a little bit of frosting (top picture) or a lot to stick the decorations on. I had kid help with this, and I just piped the frosting on and then they put the sprinkles on.

Here is the whole range of eggs. I thought this was really fun. It’s pretty simple for kids to do as well. Which one is your favorite?
